"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed." attributed to Albert Einstein, thanks to Kevin Harris copyright 1995 What else is there to say?

From this page... Haiku of Basho

(got to have a pretty picture to go with that; fingers crossed I'm not being too ambitious!)

Another example of omitting the superfluous to accent the essential. Very basically, the wood block is a 'line drawing' embellished by areas of flat colour and pattern that create a sense of solidity to the form (another reminiscent of Klimpt?). Japanese wood block print by Hanagoyomi c 1848.

A different sort of 'patching'; omission of the superfluous reveals the essential. Deux Femmes Se Reposant by Picasso

This ivory netsuke is 5.4 cm tall. Brownie points to the Victoria & Albert museum for their website; not only do they have a far superior site with far more information and excellent photography of their exhibits, the images will zoom to larger that life size for a better idea of the detail.

(The photo will link to the correct page - for some unknown reason the page thumbnail links to an error page)

Hippo ivory netsuke (don't shoot me - it's on an antiques site), man with dragon. Doesn't provide the dimensions unfortunately and as it's for sale the link will probably fail at some point. There is a block on photoblogging it too. Don't bother looking at this one - I'll find a better one elsewhere.

Sometimes there can be more content in a 'patch' than an acre of canvas. One by Samuel Cooper, from The Royal Collection - for Aliasinkhorn

Another 'patch' from one of the most famous 'patchers', Nicholas Hilliard, it will zoom to larger than the original too if you go to the site - for Aliasinkhorn.
